About Bowker Creek

Bowker Creek

Bowker Creek is the name of a creek that runs through Saanich, Victoria and Oak Bay. It is also an apt name for a bluegrass-oriented folk/country/rock band, as its band members have their roots firmly established in the Greater Victoria area, and most live within a "good banjo's throw of Bowker Creek! (Some would say any banjo throw is a good banjo throw.)

Bowker Creek draws its influences from folk, country, rock and roll, old time, swing, jazz and, yes, even traditional bluegrass. This five piece band consists of Duncan Sutherland on guitar and vocals, Renata Young on vocals and guitar, Martin Matychuk on bass and vocals, Dan Ready on mandolin and guitar and Doug VanDine on banjo. They have all played in various other bands in the Victoria area, and some further a field: Since forming about a year ago, Bowker Creek have entertained audiences at a number of folk clubs and coffee houses in the Greater Victoria area.

The voice of one band member has been described as "raw and earthy", another band member has toured with Canadian Country Music Award winner, Patricia Conroy, another also plays in a Victoria rhythm and blues band, and yet another also plays in a local swing band.

Guaranteed you'll love Bowker Creek's song selection, harmonies and musical and stage energy.

What We're about

Banyan Tree Folk is a place for young adults who love folk music to meet, play music and listen to local folk talent.
Banyan Tree welcomes college, high school and university students, people in the working world, singer/songwriters, instrumentalists, groups, solo acts, amateur and professional musicians.
We embrace traditional and contemporary folk, bluegrass and roots music. Through the showcasing of young local performers, we endeavor to advance and promote the tradition of Canadian West Coast Folk Music.
Banyan Tree Folk is a great opportunity to network with other young folk musicians and a wonderful place to listen to the talent that Victoria’s young folk music scene has to offer.
