About Genevieve Rainey
Genevieve Rainey has been on a 16 year song-writing journey and she's about a third of the way home. With 3 independent releases and countless shows in countless cites all over the world, she's got a lot of stories to tell. Part folk, part "Canadiana", a bit of country and a lot of soul, if Genevieve Rainey's guitar were a camera, then her songs would be the worn snapshots you keep in a shoebox under your bed. She invites you to listen.

About Pawnshop Diamond
After years of hanging around musicians, Katie Ormiston finally picked
up her brother's guitar and started strumming her own chords. She
had always hung around with musicians – and even dated a few – but
she never actually expected to wind up on stage herself. It began
with writing – working things out in a song, as John Prine
would say.
A romantic trip to Europe gone awry left Ormiston looking
to her music collection for answers. She found them in the songs
of Neil Young, JJ Cale and Lucinda Williams and she soon found her
own lyrical voice. A close friend, Nina Fleming, flew to Europe to
help her recover by sipping cabernet from white plastic cups on the
mediterainian.
There, the first Pawnshop Diamond songs were born
as the two friends sang harmonies on the Paris Metro. Back in the
rich musical community of East Vancouver, Ormiston didn’t need
to go far to find musical collaborators. Fleming, dusted off her
piano and another friend Jared Ferrie accompanied them on electric
guitar.
They played their first performance on Ormiston’s 30th
birthday, fulfilling a promise to herself and showing a promise of
things to come. Lucas Schuller was recruited on drums and Lynn Saffery
on bass to complete Pawnshop Diamond. Ferrie would later leave to
pursue a career in journalism and was replaced by David Taylor.
With numerous shows, a few festivals and a second studio album now under
their belt, Pawnshop Diamond are spreading their musical message
with sweet harmonies and deep grooves.

Victoria’s
Front Porch String Pickin’ Band, is a dynamic,
energetic, rootsy band based in Victoria. You bet
they sure know how to get a crowd excited and jumping
about to folk, country and bluegrass music!! The
band leaders, hailing from Calgary, are Soren on
guitar and Adam on bass. These guys managed to
pick up two stragglers here in Victoria, to join ‘em
on the front porch for pickin’ and grinnin’.
Adam Cleland on his banjo and Miriam (proud to
be the only Chinese-Canadian honky tonk fiddler
in these here parts), couldn't help but join in
the fun. So watch out Victoria, the Front Porch
String Pickin’ Band is gonna knock your socks
off - and replace them with cowboy/cowgirl boots!

Kate
Steele lives in Victoria, BC. She spent her
childhood in a handful of small towns in
Saskatchewan. She has also lived, worked,
studied and performed in the U.S. midwest,
an island off the south coast of Japan and
the Middle East. It’s possible to see
all of these places and the people Kate’s
met in the songs of her debut album, Curve
of the Earth. Saskatchewan’s landscape
plays powerfully in Kate’s lyrics and
music and she maintains close ties with her
family there. In BC, reviewers and fans have
picked up on her small town roots, noting
a warmth and a lack of pretension in both
her music and in her shows. Kate’s
musical influences include Gillian Welch,
Joni Mitchell, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Harmer
and Bob Dylan. Her attention to lyrics developed
in part through her appreciation of these
songwriters and through her study of writing
in university.
Kid on the Pavement is a UK folk musician
that fuses delicate finger picked guitar
under a blanket of enchanting lyrics and
sometimes dark observations on life

Dirty
Grace combines gypsy, folk, jazz, bluegrass,
and hip hop into their own unique style
("jazzypsky grass-hop"). With
an unusually diverse repertoire, they are
sure to dish up some tawdry grooves that
get sweaty hips swinging and feet kicking
up dust. Woven throughout is a silk thread
of three-part harmonies.
The
band formed in 2009 and consists of:
Betty Supple – vocals, guitar,
mandolin, brass, Marley Daemon - vocals,
piano, guitar, accordion, Jesse Thom
- vocals, percussion, Kevin Lynch on
bass, and Michelle Footz on trumpet.
This
month we are trying something new. Bring your
instruments for this first ever Banyan Tree
Student Jam Session! This is where you get
to meet and play with other young people who
are interested in the same kind of music.
7:30pm Open Mic as usual - we've
had some excellent performers in the past.
We'd love to hear you perform!
Check out our past open mic performers.
9pm Instead of a feature we're
inviting all musicians (even beginners) to join
in a Folk Music Jam. Take a turn sharing a song
you know (tell us the key and run through the chords
first so that others may join in). You can play,
pass or request a song for your turn.
